Fit To Fly

GPs are encouraged by the GMC to ‘work within the limits of (our) competence’. As GPs are not specially trained in aviation medicine and not insured for this work, nor is it included in the GP NHS Contract, we are unable to state whether patients are Fit to Fly or not. This often affects pregnant women and as a result we strongly encourage patients to obtain such letters from an obstetrician. Alternatively patients are able to obtain these certificates from various private sources.

We understand that this decision may cause inconvenience to some of our patients. However our primary responsibility is to ensure the safety and wellbeing of all our patients. We believe this decision aligns with that responsibility and the British Medical Association guidance.
